A fun time was had by all at The Christmas Lunch. Our staff and lovely volunteers produced a beautiful 3 course lunch with all the trimmings. The Hall was decorated and looked very festive. We enjoyed brilliant performances from our Ukulele Group and Choir and once again, the singing waiters treated us to some beautiful opera during the meal. Thank you to all who helped make it a very special day.
Bring & Buy Sale
Thursday 14th November 2019
Our annual Bring & Buy Sale was a huge success. The room was buzzing with activity and all stalls did a roaring trade. The Avenue Club Team are very grateful for all the generous donations we received and would like to thank all our lovely volunteers who helped on the day. All in all, a great day was had by all.
Monday 4th November
Garry Freer, our Men’s Wellbeing leader and Dr David Beales talked about our Health, the importance of exercise, nutrition and mental wellbeing and will signpost ways in which you can improve your life and age with vitality. David is a member of the men’s group; he says, ‘We have focused on exercise that fits our individual needs, quietening the busy mind, nutrition, men’s health issues such as prostatism, as well as having open and confident discussions on areas of worry and concern. I leave the session feeling uplifted and ready for the week ahead. We have a good laugh and it’s also a way of meeting new people and making friends with similar interests.’
RNLI Lifeboats on The Thames
Monday 22nd October
David Clarke gave a very interesting talk describing the search and rescue service operated by the RNLI on the Thames based on his experience as lifeboat crew and current role as Press Officer for Chiswick Lifeboat Station. He included many photographs and videos of the wide range of rescues by Chiswick Lifeboat Station, the second busiest in the whole of the UK and Ireland.
Our walkers were out in the sunshine for their October walk. 18 members set out through Kew Gardens, then over Kew Bridge, turning left for an interesting stroll through Brentford and along the canal. A quick stop for coffee at Sion House Nursery then it was through Isleworth and onto Richmond Lock. They finished with lunch at the White Swan.
The next walk will take place on Thursday 14th November.
Living with Hearing Loss – June and July 2019
Deafplus ran a series of talks about hearing loss and how to live with it. They taught basic lipreading, gave tips on making communicating easier and talked about useful resources. We plan to run the course again in the future.
Knit and Stitch Group visit Holly Lodge, Wednesday 24th April
Our knit and stitch group enjoyed a lovely outing to Holly Lodge in Richmond Park where they made some beautiful soaps followed by a pub lunch along the river.
Ageing Youthfully, Thursday 9th May
Our Men’s Wellbeing and Pilates Teacher, Garry Freer, and Dr David Beales, GP, facilitated a very interesting seminar on how to elevate the quality of our lives as we age. It was very informative and everyone who attended came away with a variety of ways to improve the quality of their lives.
Outing to the Bluebell Railway, 3rd May
Over 30 of our members set off on the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex on a 22 mile round trip between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead stations. They enjoyed a ploughman’s lunch on the train while looking at the beautiful countryside and admiring the stunning bluebells. A good time was had by all!
Flamenco Performance, Friday 10th May
We were delighted to welcome back Rosandra and her guitarist, who treated us to another stunning performance of flamenco music and dance. It was thoroughly enjoyable and we’re already looking forward to her next performance!
Outing to the Lightbox Gallery in Woking, Friday 17th May
By popular demand, we organised another outing to the Lightbox Gallery in Woking. Two of our kind volunteers drove the mini buses and after a tour of the exhibition ‘Women in Photography – A History of British Trailblazers’ everyone enjoyed a light lunch on the canal side before setting off home.

Roy Norton, ex-BBC Producer, gave an interesting talk about some of the great milestones in television history as well as sharing some hilarious ‘off camera’ anecdotes and memorable mistakes;
