About This Lesson
The Group is very friendly and welcomes new members. We have a knitting fraternity who while away the morning knitting garments, toys or patches for blankets. The Group’s main project of the year is to make a Bed Quilt, which we raffle as a fundraiser for the Club. The draw takes place at our annual Bring & Buy Sale — a highlight of the Club’s year. Each year the Group chooses a theme for the Quilt – past themes include Rainbow Colours, Noah’s Ark, Kew Gardens, Butterflies, Geometric Designs amongst others.
Our 2017 theme was The English Countryside. We then applique and/or embroider our chosen design on to an 8″ patch of calico. Once we have enough patches (and we need a lot!) the patches are arranged in a pleasing design, sashing and backing are chosen and Thelma and team machine stitch the quilt together. Binding — the final process in quilt-making — is a favourite Group effort with everyone sitting around a large table hand-stitching. The Group also makes various knitted and stitched items to sell at our Stall at Kew Village Market, as well as at The Kew Horticultural Show in August. We enter the Quilt in the Group Project category at the show and last we won we the Queen Elizabeth Cup for the best Group Project, which we are very proud of.
